With the celebrations of Naga Panchami in my house, we are excited in one more thing. Eating the very special sweet preparation meant to be an exclusive offering to the Snake God. A simple preparation that is made in a jiffy and eaten in equal speed.
During the celebrations of Naga Panchami, people of Karnataka prepare Tambittu. (Check out my recent post on Naga Panchami) It is a traditional sweet of Karnataka. Dropping the traditional shape of sweets (round laddu or the diamond shaped burfi), these sweet dishes are having a different shape that resembles a trapezium. A tapering cylindrical structure. I wonder, if the name “Tambittu” is a kannada word or an improvised English word “Thumb it”. Because in preparing these tambittu u need to use your thumb and press the mass together to get the desired shape.
To prepare tambittu, one needs very simple and basic ingredient. Roasted Bengal gram flour (Daliya), jaggery, dried coconut and sesame seeds along with a little butter is all it takes. Even the method of preparation is simple. Simply mix all the ingredients together. Add the jaggery syrup and hold it.
My mother prepares the most delicious tambittu and none of us can resist eating more than one. On the day of Naga Panchami, we prepare tambittu and distribute it to friends and family members as a part of our tradition.
Check out my mother’s recipe of tambittu and try it on your own. Share with me your experience and tag me if you try out this recipe.
